About the Pakistan Joint Branch
Branch of IMarE was established in Pakistan 1954. It was made Pakistan Joint Branch of IMarE & RINA in 1976 by consent of both parent Institutes .The name was changed to Pakistan Joint Branch of The IMarEST & RINA as per decision of Privy Council in 2001 The Pakistan Joint Branch is an active branch with members from a number of marine areas such as shipping, energy, industry, ship repair, surveying and classification. The branch organizes technical meetings by leading speakers on topical events. Many of these events are organized jointly with the Institute of Engineers, Pakistan. The technical and social events are well attended and provide opportunity for information exchange, social and business networking. Any person with interest in Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and Naval Architecture is welcome to participate in the events of the branch.
Marine Activities in Pakistan
Pakistan has two modern ports at Karachi and Bin Qasim handling the entire international trade of Pakistan through sea. First stage of third port in Baluchistan Province has been completed. It is expected to be fully functional in about 5 years. There are three container terminals, two in Karachi and one at Pot Qasim. There are liquid cargo terminals at both ports. Special purpose terminals for grain and fertilizer are being constructed at Port Qasim. Second phase of Qasim International Container Terminal is in advance stage of construction. Deepening and widening of Navigational Channel of Port Qasim in about to start so as to provide draft of 14.5 metres to large ships. Steel silos with a capacity of 24,000 tons of loose cement for direct pumping into ships have been recently installed at Karachi Port. The loading capacity of the terminal 10,000 to 12,000 tons per day. Dredging work has started for Deep Water Container Port which has been designed to have 16 meter draft with 600 meter jetty. In the second phase draft would be increased to 18 meters to accommodate mother ships.
