The purpose of the IMO is “to provide machinery for cooperation among Governments in the field of governmental regulation and practices relating to technical matters of all kinds affecting shipping engaged in international trade; to facilitate the general adoption of the highest practicable standards in matters concerning maritime safety, efficiency of navigation and prevention and control of marine pollution from ships; and to deal with administrative and legal matters related to these matters” taken from Article 1 of the Convention of the International Maritime Organization which was adopted at a conference in Geneva on 6 March 1948

The IMarEST has held Non Governmental Organisation status since 1995.

The purpose of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is to “to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment and the decision-making processes of its Member State”

The IMarEST has held Non Governmental Organisation status since 2006.

The IPCC was established “to provide the decision makers and others interested in climate change with an objective source of information about climate change” Where it does not conduct any research itself it role is “to assess on a comprehensive, objective and transparent basis the latest scientific, technical and socio-economic literature produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of the risk of human-induced climate change its observed and projected impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation”

The IMarEST has held observer status at the IPCC since 2007. IMarEST representation is coordinated through the Climate Change Special Interest Group.

The United Nations Convention of the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) is a defined as a “comprehensive constitution for the oceans dealing with all aspects of man’s interaction with the oceans and seas” UNCLOS sets out the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and sea must be carried out.
Following the recommendation of the Commission on Sustainable Development and consisted with legal framework provided by UNCLOS, the General Assembly decided in 1999 to establish an open-ended consultative proves in order to facilitate an annual review by the General Assembly by suggesting particular issues to be considered by the General Assembly with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be announced.

IMarEST has been an observer at the Informal Consultative Process on the Oceans and the Law of the Seas since 2008.  This is facilitated by the IMarEST having Special Consultative Status at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) (held since 2008)

The Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies (CEMT) is a federation of the leading societies of naval architects, marine engineers and others in the field of maritime technology in Europe. Its object and purpose is to promote the scientific development of maritime technology in all its branches in Europe by facilitating the exchange of idea and information between the members of the constituent societies. In particular by the organisation of conferences, normally held bi-annually, for the presentation and discussion of papers of the highest technical standards. An important matter is to give advice and assistance to international bodies by drawing upon group of experts from amongst the members of the constituent societies.

The Group consists of parliamentarians and a full spectrum of those concerned with engineering. It acts as a forum for the exchange of information and views amongst its members. It operates on an all-party basis within and outside parliament in order to:

CIMAC is a worldwide non-profit association consisting of National Member Associations, National Member Groups and Corporate Members in 20 countries in America, Asia and Europe. It brings together manufacturers of diesel and gas engines and gas turbines, users such as ship-owners, utilities and rail operators and also suppliers, oil companies, classification societies and scientists.

The objectives of CIMAC are to:

The Small Craft Surveyors' Forum is coalition of organisations representing small craft surveyors world-wide, and with headquarters in the UK.  The Forum provides an opportunity for these organisations to work together, to enhance the professional status of the surveyor and to promote understanding of these activities by the marine industry and the boat-buying public.

• To raise the status of the small craft surveyor (“surveyors”) as members of relevant bodies
• To review and maintain standards amongst existing surveyors and assist new surveyors to achieve good professional standards
