General Information
The Workshop seeks to bring together the shipping industry and ocean scientists to:
- Examine the potential for shipping industry involvement in deploying new technologies
- Describe existing and emerging technologies for making underway measurements from Ships of Opportunity
- Explore the business benefits of participation in ocean observations
- Contribute to the planning of future partnerships
Background
More than 150 years ago US Navy Captain, Matthew Fontaine Maury established a co-ordinated scheme for sustained observations of the oceans in support of practical navigation and safety at sea. Ever since, officers of the merchant marine have, as part of their watch duties, sent in regular observations of the weather and the oceans.
Although we can now observe the surface ocean from space, knowledge of the body of the oceans is still confined to measurements made from ships and instruments. Today’s merchant vessels can carry sophisticated instrument packages making continuous measurements which contribute to better understanding of the oceans and the processes driving weather and climate.
