The last forty years have seen significant change in the shipping industry from the viewpoint of the safety and impact on the marine environment. More recently the long running boom has turned down. The boom generated funds to purchase new vessels and operate to high standards. The trade off between cost and safety has not been at the forefront of the industry’s mind.
As we move into the downturn the imperative to maintain and indeed improve standards remains. How do we continue to improve safety and reduce pollution in difficult times?
Overlaid on this is the climate change agenda which is becoming more prominent and will impact on marine technology.
