Professional Recognition for MCA Certified Yacht Engineers
The IMarEST is the professional membership body and learned society for marine professionals. Our 15,000 members, based in over 100 countries, and at sea, are engaged in all aspects of marine engineering, science and technology, and the industries and services that support maritime economies.
The development of commercial and privately owned yachts over the last two decades has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of large, complex and sophisticated yachts, operating internationally. To ensure that these yachts are operated by competent personnel, the MCA has introduced a range of certificates of competency for Yacht Engineers. The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has endorsed these certificates as a route to professional membership, engineering registration and international recognition, which are becoming ever more important to practicing Yacht Engineers.

The IMarEST, under license by the Engineering Council UK , and in partnership with the MCA, has developed a special streamlined application process for candidates for professional membership. Those who hold a Class 1 or Class 2 Yacht Engineers Certificate can apply for IMarEST Professional Membership and Registration through this streamlined process.
For those applicants with a Class 1 Yacht Engineers certificate with subsequent service as chief engineer on a modern mega yacht over 24m, a higher membership category (Associate Member, AMIMarEST) may be available.
The Institute has developed this route because it recognises that the training for Class 1 & Class 2 Yacht Engineers provides an integral programme that meets the professional standards for membership and professional registration.
What this means for you as a professional yacht engineer is that you can apply for professional membership and registration through the IMarEST without going through the full IMarEST application process.
To apply via the MCA streamlined route please contact Membership Services here.
Application forms and supporting documentation will be made available online shortly.
*Applicants for Associate Member may be asked for further information.
