Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard’s new 138km repair quay was officially opened yesterday in a prestigious event marked by the attendance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalilfa, Deputy of His Majesty King Hamad and Crown Prince.
The US$188M facility, opened to kick-start ASRY’s 35th anniversary celebrations, has an alongside water depth of 12m, and is capable of accommodating three 300 000dwt vessels simultaneously.
Since the yard opened in 1977, expansion has seen the facility grow from its original 500 000dwt capacity graving dock with the addition of two floating docks capable of accommodating vessels up to 80 000dwt and 120 000dwt respectively, two of the largest slipways in the region and 15 repair berths, all backed-up by a comprehensive array of workshops and technical services.
ASRY’s Chairman, Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa said: ‘ASRY was the first shiprepair yard in the Middle East and since its inception has established itself as a leader both in the region and internationally. This is a reflection of the overall quality of the yard, its facilities and the skilled personnel available.’
He furthered that once the shipping industry picks up and gathers momentum, ‘ASRY will be able to push forward with new plans and ventures, both at home and internationally, but only when the time is right!’
