HIGHLY TOPICAL IMarEST LECTURE LOOKS AT MAINTAINING SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
A significant change in the shipping industry from the viewpoint of the safety and impact on the marine environment has taken place over the last forty years. However, the current economic climate could have a major impact on this vital area in the opinion of Martin Shaw, Vice President HSSE, BP Shipping. He will deliver the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) Stanley Gray Lecture ‘Safe Ships, Clean Seas and Climate Change’ on Tuesday 7 July 2009.
“The long-running boom has turned down,” says Martin Shaw. “The boom generated funds to purchase new vessels and operate to high standards. The trade-off between cost and safety has not been at the forefront of the industry’s mind. As we move into the downturn, the imperative to maintain and indeed improve standards remains. How do we continue to improve safety and reduce pollution in difficult times? Overlaid on this is the climate change agenda, which is becoming more prominent and which will also impact on marine technology.”
“Martin Shaw has certainly picked a compelling title bringing together three key elements affecting the shipping industry, and by overlaying these three with the effects of the economic downturn he will most certainly provide our audience with much food for thought and debate at the next Stanley Gray Lecture,” says Marcus Jones, Chief Executive of IMarEST.
The lecture, being held at IMarEST HQ at 80 Coleman Street, London EC2R 5BJ is free to attend for IMarEST members and costs £15 (incl VAT) for non-members. Tea will be served from 1700hrs; the lecture will begin at 1730hrs and a post-lecture reception will begin at 1845hrs. Reservations can be made online at www.imarest.org, through direct contact with the IMarEST Events Department at +44 (0)20 7382 2655 or at events@imarest.org

About Stanley Gray and the Stanley Gray Lectures
The IMarEST Stanley Gray Lectures (and the annual Stanley Gray Awards) are named in memory of Stanley Gray who was the Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Port Directorate of Basra during the 1950s & 60s. When he died in 1973 he left half his estate to be held by the Institute in trust to create the Stanley Gray Fund. He expressed the wish that the money should be awarded via a scholarship or prize to wherever the Institute saw distinction in Marine Engineering. This remit has been expanded following due process to include Marine Science and Technology. The Stanley Gray Series of prestige lectures, launched in 2002, is held to mark his generosity to, and patronage of the Institute.
