REFURBISHMENT – A GROWING BUSINESS AREA FOR HARRIS PYE (BEK)
Harris Pye’s BEK Division often finds in refurbishment work that one job leads to another. Recently, they completed the design, manufacture and installation of a new galley, dishwashing area and Officers Mess Pantry on a vessel undergoing a major refit at the Birkenhead yard of Cammell Laird. Work on the Officers Mess Pantry led to work on other areas of the vessel undertaken by the Harris Pye Group in the turnkey project.
The new galley was designed by Harris Pye’s BEK Division to meet the specific requirements of the vessel’s owner, and built to USPH standards in BEK's workshops in South Wales. Additional catering equipment was supplied by MKN and other major catering equipment manufacturers. The project required the complete strip out of the existing galley, including decks, bulkheads deckheads, fire doors and roller shutters as well as all the HVAC, mechanical and electrical services.
“The BEK Division, initially created to provide stainless steel expertise onboard cruise ships, now also provides bespoke products to a large cross section of industries and vessels, this recent installation is a classic example of what we can do – we are undertaking a growing number of refurbishment contracts,” explains the Harris Pye BEK’s Managing Director, Dave Hayden. “Very often there is more to be done than just the simple refurbishment of the cited area.
“As the contract was awarded on a turnkey basis we were able to involve other areas of the Harris Pye group in this project providing a one-stop-shop for all the necessary work aboard the vessel.”
All new pipe work and scupper arrangements, new HVAC, fire dampers and CO2 fixed fire fighting systems were installed by the Harris Pye Group, as were all cable installation, lighting and control systems. The Group also carried out electrical load calculations and, in addition to the manufacture of the galley, the fitting of all new stainless steel bulkhead and deckhead cladding and A60 fire rated decking including new non slip floor tiles.
Further Harris Pye involvement in the contract included the planning and fitting of the new air extraction and vent systems throughout the entire accommodation to MCA and Classification requirements as well as the supply and installation of fixed fire fighting systems in high risk areas.
The work was completed on schedule and to budget using Harris Pye management, labour and at the completion of the work all ‘as-built’ and schematic drawings were prepared and presented to the owners.
