Factors and predictions surrounding forecasts of rising sea levels are an area of tremendous confusion. Public opinion, the media, and even some scientists cite widely varying numbers ranging from 18 cm (7 in) to 60 meters (200 ft) by the end of this century. One underlying reason for the huge discrepancy is a highly controversial determination by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in its latest report. Many prominent experts argue that it understates sea level forecasts to the point of misrepresentation.
