The Denny Medal

The Denny Silver Gilt Medal is awarded to the best paper published over the course of one year in each of the Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology (JMET) and the Journal of Operational Oceanography (JOO). The medal is awarded by IMarEST Council following recommendation from the Editorial Boards and the Proceedings Supervisory Board. Joint authors are eligible with a maximum of 3 authors receiving a medal for any one paper. The Denny Medal winner(s) are not eligible for any Stanley Gray Award in the same year.

The Denny Medal was first awarded in 1893 following a £250 capital gift from Peter Denny in 1892.

Who was Denny?

Peter Denny, the fifth son of William Denny (1779–1833), was born at Dumbarton where the family had been involved in boat building since at least the middle of the 18th century. He joined his two elder brothers engaged in iron shipbuilding in 1844 and in 1850 he went into partnership with John McAusland and John Tulloch. Peter Denny was the first to experiment with iron screw steamships, and his success lead to a large expansion of the business. He was a considerable benefactor to the town of Dumbarton.

The Stanley Gray Award - Silver Medal

The IMarEST awards a silver medal to the best winner of a Branch Certificate in the preceding year within each Division. To be eligible for a Stanley Gray Medal, the Branch Certificate winners must be able to provide a formal paper reflecting on the presentation made. This Medal is awarded by Divisional Council on recommendation from the Branch Committees.

Stanley Gray Award – Branch Certificate

A Certificate is awarded by each Branch for the best presentation made as part of their programmes within the IMarEST technical year (April to April). The certificate is awarded by Branch Committees from nominations made by their respective members.
