GE
heralds LM2500+ certification |
|
GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE) Transportation's marine business has been buoyed
by United States Navy certification for its LM2500+ aero-derivative gas
turbine for 35 000bhp for mechanical drive applications. The turbine can
now be used for powering the US Navy's eighth LHD and follow-on ships
in the WASP (LHD 1) class of large-deck, Multipurpose amphibious assault
ships.
During the 500h testing regime conducted at GE's United
States manufacturing facility, no engine forced shutdowns were experienced.
Other aspects of the test programme included:
• Engine was manoeuvred from idle to full power
• 35% of the time the engine ran at 100% power
• Engine ran to internal temperatures associated with 100 deg F
ambient temperatures (a standard Navy day)
• Test emphasised cyclic stresses and high temperature effects
• Test was followed by disassembly and inspection of major subassemblies.
The ship's hybrid electric drive system will have electric
motors to provide propulsion power at low loitering speeds. All of the
vessels in the LHD series are designed and built by Northrop Grumman Ship
Systems. The previous seven were powered by steam propulsion systems and
GE also supplied the last three ships' main reduction gears. The LHD 8
will be powered by two GE LM2500+ gas turbines, coupled with GE main reduction
gearing.
Karl Matson, general manager, GE Transportation's marine
business told MER that this will be the first military application of
the LM2500+, and 'we believe the LHD programme will pave the way for the
use of the LM2500+ for a variety of future domestic and international
naval programs.'
Of course the first LM2500+ to enter commercial service
was in 2000 aboard the world's first gas turbine-powered cruise ship,
Millennium. That year also marked the first fast ferry Application of
the LM2500+ aboard Societe Nationale Maritime Corse Mediterranee's Corsaire
13000. Today, the gas turbine is used aboard Princess Cruises' Coral Princess
cruise ship in a COmbined Diesel And Gas (CODAG) turbine configuration
with four diesel engine-driven alternators. Currently there are more than
30 of these gas turbines in or slated for operation worldwide on various
commercial fast ferries and cruise ships.

| Holed hull cushions the blow for HAL |
|
AUSTAL SHIP’S groundbreaking 40kt Auto Express 126.7m cargo-vehicle
passenger trimaran currently under construction for Spanish ferry operator
Fred. Olsen SA is rapidly taking shape at the Henderson shipyard in Western
Australia.
Construction is on schedule and the stern of the vessel is
easily identifiable with the waterjet ducts now in place, while on the
hulls plating work is proceeding. Above the hull the superstructure upper
deck and observation deck extends over the midship section of the vessel
and the forward chain and roof structure have been erected. Fit out work
on the bridge has commenced and the forward
console structure and laminate surfaces are now in place.
After it is delivered later this year, the new triamaran will
operate around the
Canary Islands on the routes from Los Cristianos, Tenerifeto San Sebastian,
Gomera and the island of Palma as Benchijigua Express.
‘The ship is clearly being viewed by many as the benchmark
for a new generation of large fast ferries,’ says Austal managing
director Bob Mckinnon. Seatrials will take place in a few months time.

| Multraship
completes Domiat salvage |
|
TERNEUZEN-BASED Multraship Salvage has completed the salvage of the 38
391dwtEgyptian-flagged Domiat, which grounded near Copenhagen on June
7. The LR-class vessel was loaded with 33 000t of potash, bound from St
Petersburg to India, when it ran aground at speed on a rocky shoal.
A salvage team of eight under the direction of
Multraship salvage officer Jan Snip used three tugs, including Multraship's42t
bollard pull Barracuda, a barge and a grab system to lighten, refloat,
reposition and reload the vessel.
Earlier this year (see MER, March 2004, p6) Multraship
Salvage recovered three containers with toxic cargo which was lost overboard
by the Ethiopian vessel Andinet in the North Sea.
The salvage operation was carried out by the sheer legs
Cormorant and the multi-purpose vessel Multraship Commander. The containers
were lifted from the seabed by the Cormorant and placed in watertight,
oversized flats on the aft deck of the Multraship Commander and were discharged
in Rotterdam for inspection.
The cargo consisted of containerised steel drums of wood
preservatives known as CCA72%, the main constituents of which include
arsenic pent oxide, chromium trioxide and copper dioxide.

| SEA5 Environmental Report
Published |
|
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is conducting
a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of a draft plan to offer for
licensing for oil and gas exploration and production blocks within the
offshore area to the east of the Scottish mainland, Orkney and Shetland.
Also included in the draft plan is the re-offer for licensing of blocks
in other areas of the UK Continental Shelf previously subject to DTI SEA.
An important part of any SEA is the involvement of a full
range of stakeholders in the consultation on the proposed plan or programme.
An Environmental Report of the assessment of the DTI’s draft plan
and its potential environmental implications is now available on the web-site
www.offshore-sea.org.uk for a 90 day consultation period (ending 31 December
2004). The website also includes details of how to return your comments
on the proposed plan.
If you require a CD or paper copy of the Environmental
Report please apply to:

All the fun at the fair
– and more - with Imagineering 2004 |
The IMarEST stand at this years 'Imagineering Event' was
again a great success in attracting children of all ages, from 5 to 18.
The stand was manned by local members of the West Midlands Area who travelled
from around the region to support this event over the three days of the
August Bank Holiday. This year was the fourth year of the event being
supported by local companies like Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Catapillar, Goodrich,
Delcam and National Grid Transco, plus organisations such as the RAF,
REME, IMechE, Young Engineers clubs, many others and ourselves. So you
could see we were in good company.

Building for the Next Generation: Two young revellers
get to grips with the lego kits
Some may say why would we be at such an event but IMarEST
firmly believe if we are to have future generations of engineers yet alone
seagoing engineers scientists and technologists we have to plant the seed
in young minds anywhere we can. On the stand as well as giving out hundreds
of leaflets to suit all ages (from colouring pages, to word searches,
to careers information) we had two attractions, a steady hand game and
a 'Name the parts of a ship' competition. The competition attracted well
over a hundred correct entries and two lucky children will be receiving
Lego ship kits. These were supplied by The Chamber of shipping who with
The IMarEST supplied such a great selection of give aways and leaflets.
If we manage to land a few careers leaflets into some school libraries
(as we always ask the children to take them to their school library) or
interest just a few in looking at a marine career it will have been worth
while.
If you are interested in Imagineering in the
West Midlands or for your area see the web site imagineering.gb.com. |
