ABS introduce streamlined maintenance |
|
ABS Nautical Systems has responded to client requests and developed a new interface for shipowners enabling direct downloading of its machinery survey status data into the Maintenance & Repair module of the NS-5 fleet management software.
The classification society believes this to be the first time a direct interface of this type has been created between class survey data and any commercial fleet management software package currently available on the market.
Before this development, a shipowner or operator would have to access the survey status information on each vessel in the fleet via the classification society’s Web-based system, before re-entering this data into the module — again, individually for each vessel.
‘It was an arduous task with a potential for error due to the double handling of the data,’ pointed out Jack Kitchura, President, ABS Nautical Systems.
According to Kitchura, the system ‘will make life simpler and promote data accuracy for the operators of hundreds of vessels that use our NS-5 software system to manage their onboard operations.’
As such, the operator is given access to the ABS survey database direct from the Maintenance & Repair module and then to download all the applicable Continuous Machinery Survey (CMS) information for the operator’s entire ABS classed fleet with a few simple key strokes.
A key feature is that of the Replication Manager module, which means that the next time one of the affected ships logs into the program, all relevant machinery survey data will be automatically updated on the vessel’s own system, allowing a Chief Engineer to be able to plan on-going maintenance and survey programs. Additionally, the survey information will also reschedule jobs that had already been entered into the Maintenance & Repair module.
‘It should be emphasised that this is a one way data transfer,’ added Kitchura. ‘The owner has access to the survey status on his vessels but ABS, as the classification society, can not gain access to the owner’s Maintenance & Repair data which remains confidential.’
Initial work has seen the interface provide access to machinery survey information as this involves the largest number of survey items. ABS plans to introduce a second phase which will provide owners with similar automatic updates on all remaining survey items affecting the hull and statutory certificates. This next stage is scheduled for the second half of 2006.

| Simulator proves its versatility |
State-of-the-art simulation has been the central focus behind a challenging project for the Orlan concrete island drilling structure.
Initiated on behalf of the Seattle-based Crowley Marine Services, BMT Seatech utilised its PC Rembrandt simulator to assist Crowley personnel with performing set-down evolutions of the Orlan structure.
As such, detailed modelling of the hydrodynamic response of the structure in shallow water for input into PC Rembrandt was completed for real-time simulation analysis. BMT hydrodynamicists then validated the mathematical model of Orlan with Crowley personnel before running a number of simulation workshops to establish tug requirements for the tow and setdown, as well as establishing operability envelopes for the set-down process in Chayvo Bay, Sakhalin Island, Russia.
To achieve operational needs, Orlan had to be set down within 5m of the target location and within 1deg of the desired heading.
Primary work involved using the simulator to assess exactly the number and size of tug required to be able to safely handle Orlan during its final transit from the staging area to the set-down point, and then manoeuvre into position at the target site.
Simulations looked at the effects of various combinations of wind, waves, and current, and were performed using detailed electronic charts of the set-down and staging area, created from recent hydrographical data.
For the second stage, a refined PC Rembrandt simulation was utilised, including the ability to model the actual set-down of the structure. Advanced mathematical algorithms enabled modelling of the entire operation from approach through setdown allowing multiple scenarios to be quickly and effectively assessed.
Commenting on the adoption of PC Rembrandt for the project, Simon Burnay, Manoeuvring Simulation Products Manager at BMT SeaTech, said: ‘Over the years we have proven that PC Rembrandt is capable of far more than just onboard shiphandling training. As one of the most advanced simulators on the market, it has been used and validated on a wide range of manoeuvring and navigation studies including new LNG terminals, cruise ship design options and structures such as Orlan.
‘These projects, run for major ship operators and energy firms worldwide, have successfully demonstrated the use of PC Rembrandt as a manoeuvring and navigation assessment tool at every stage of these typically challenging and innovative projects.
‘Following the detailed evaluation of tow and set-down scenarios, the Orlan structure was successfully installed within on metre of its target location, demonstrating that practice really can make perfect,’ he concluded.

| Underwater Sound and Marine Life |
09/10/2006
City Conference Centre, London
Anthropogenic noise and its impact on the marine environment remains an issue of concern within the maritime community. There have been a number of meetings to look at the different aspects of this issue from the policy required to regulate the emission of sound through to the science required to minimise its impact on the marine environment. This co- sponsored meeting will aim to build on the IACMST report Underwater Sound and Marine Life published in 2006 by looking at exploring a number of the recommendations further so as to contribute to the ongoing developments in the areas of science and policy.
The conference programme will educate and inform, consisting of thought provoking plenary talks and periods of discussion. Selected speakers chosen for their expertise in specific areas will act as scene setters and will provide delegates with a balanced overview of the biological science involved, the physics involved (acoustics) and the over-arching applicable laws and policies. Alongside research and policy in the UK, the talks will also look at developments in regulation and science in the US and in Europe.
A wrap up session at the end of the day will be used to synthesise the issues and ideas discussed. Following the wrap up session it is planned that a Forum, whose establishment was recommended by the IACMST report, will be launched by Prof Howard Dalton, Chairman of IACMST.
It is anticipated this will be a highly popular event so an early expression of intention to attend is advised.
A small charge will be applied to this meeting.
To read the IACMST report please visit http://www.marine.gov.uk

A new biennial event |

A new biennial event has recently been launched incorporating a hands-on ocean technology exhibition with in-classroom and on-water demonstrations and training sessions. Organised by Intelligent Exhibitions Ltd in partnership with the Association of Marine Scientific Industries and hosted by the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, Ocean Business 2007 will be held next March from 27 – 29 March 2007.
In the space of three days visitors will have the opportunity to attend over 200 training and demonstration workshops providing first hand knowledge of the equipment and systems on the market. Not just another exhibition, but an event that provides manufacturers and system suppliers with the opportunity to meet face to face with users to demonstrate the latest technological advances in equipment, explore opportunities for new applications and to collaborate on design issues and options for future developments.
The International Federation of Hydrographic Societies and IMAREST have agreed to support the event as have the leading industry magazines. We are confident that this event will launch in to the calendar as a key must attend biennial event.”
