| The Electric Ship Technology
Demonstrator is an exciting, full scale, integrated full electric
propulsion and distribution demonstration facility, jointly
funded by the UK MoD and the French DGA. The facility is designed,
built and operated by ALSTOM as part of the joint Anglo-French
Electric Ship Programme. It is sited at the ALSTOM Whittle Research
Centre at Whetstone near Leicester and is being used to de-risk
advanced electric power and propulsion systems in order to meet
the requirements of future UK and French warships. All
demonstration activity is controlled by a comprehensive automation
system using standard ALSTOM control interfaces. A wide variety
of tests have been completed to date culminating in a suite
of Scenario Tests that included short circuits, de-excitation
and mal-synchronisation of the full 20MW propulsion and 2MW
distribution systems. High fidelity data from all tests is
captured by an acquisition system and is used to validate
comprehensive models of the equipment and systems being demonstrated.
The ALSTOM team who undertook them will
present the results of key tests and there will be opportunities
to discuss their experiences with them. There is also an open
invitation for delegates to visit the site the next day and
see testing in action.
