| The
aim
The Indian Ocean provides a unique oceanic environment
compared to the other Oceans. The absence of a
northern extent to the Ocean results in the monsoon
circulation, which causes the surface ocean circulation,
in the north, to reverse seasonally. Connection
to the Pacific Ocean through the Indonesian archipelago
also has a large influence on the circulation
patterns in the Ocean. Indian Ocean rim countries,
which include 1.5 billion people, consist mainly
of financially disadvantaged countries with low
investment in scientific research. Hence, in comparison
to other oceans, the knowledge base and interaction
and networking between scientists working in the
region is poor. This conference aims to bring
together scientists working in the region to present
recent scientific endeavours in the marine environment
of the Indian Ocean.
Themes
The conference organisers would like to invite
those with an interest in the Indian Ocean marine
environment to present Oral or Poster presentations
at the conference. All aspects of Indian Ocean
marine science will be covered in the conference
with aim the linking science, engineering and
management. Papers may be presented either in
General sessions or in any of the Special themes:
— Climate
and ocean basin processes
— Estuarine and mangrove processes
— Operational oceanography
— Coral Reefs
— Coastal and Continental shelf processes —
Coastal and ocean management
— Fisheries
and Aquaculture
— Marine Technology
A number of fellowships will be
available to enable participation of scientists
from the Indian Ocean region.
