2nd International
Ballast Water Treatment R&D Symposium

Monday 21 - Wednesday 23 July 2003
International Maritime Organization, London, UK

2nd International Ballast Water Treatment R&D Symposium

The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens to new environments via ships' ballast water is considered one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the global shipping industry this century, and requires the urgent development of innovative management and treatment measures. The Global Ballast Water Management Programme (GloBallast), in conjunction with The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), are pleased to announce the 2nd International Ballast Water Treatment R&D Symposium, to be held at IMO Headquarters, London on 21-23 July 2003.

The R&D symposium has a truly global scope and highly focused objectives, and is intentionally scheduled immediately after the 49th meeting of IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which will be making key decisions on the new international ballast water Convention. The symposium therefore offers an unrivaled opportunity to present R&D outcomes and directions to the administrations and shipping industries of IMO member States.
