‘A workshop to explore how enhanced understanding of the oceans improves weather and climate prediction enabling better informed business decisions’

All businesses are vulnerable to risks associated with adverse weather and climate. On October 31 st 2007 the IMarEST will be holding a workshop to better understand these risks and explore the business benefits of an improved ability to predict weather and climate.

The workshop will:

  • Discuss how improvements in weather forecasts and climate projections would impact short, medium and long term business planning.
  • Inform delegate of the degree to which achieving improvements is dependent on understanding the critical role of the oceans in driving weather and climate.
  • Illustrate that achieving these improvements depends on timely, coordinated and sustained global ocean observations and ocean modelling.
  • Explore the role of business in advocacy for effective public investment in ocean observation and forecasting.

In attendance will be senior representatives across the insurance, energy, utilities, construction, leisure, tourism, agriculture, retail, transport, manufacturing and financial sectors and with representatives of regulatory organisations.

The day will consist of three sessions:

Session I will introduce the science behind short, medium and long term forecasting and describing the degree to which improving forecasting and prediction and reducing uncertainties is reliant on knowledge of the oceans. Global, regional and local impacts of improved observations will be illustrated with particular emphasis on the three themes of extreme winds (and especially hurricanes), European Winter/Summer temperatures, rainfall distribution and sea level rise/storm surges.

Session II will look specifically at the impacts of weather and climate on business and will provide case studies relevant to the industry sectors represented.

Session III will consist of parallel workshops evaluating how enhanced weather and climate information better informs short, medium and long term business decisions for each sector and determining how business can help shape national and international investment priorities which improve ability to predict future weather and climate.
