As our awareness of the issue of climate change becomes clearer, so too does our cause for concern, and if we are to avoid dangerous climate change, we need to act globally and with urgency. This is no small challenge – we need to address key global issues.
The IMarEST Climate Change Debate engages marine professionals in discussing society’s greatest battle and focuses on how the marine community can meet the challenges presented by climate change. It is crucially important that young engineers and scientists, those who will be tasked with the responsibility of explaining and combating climate change, are given as many opportunities as possible to have a judicious debate on the many aspects of this complex problem. We hope that this debate will create a much greater awareness of how marine professionals, but also individual citizens, can play their part in society’s call to action on global warming.
The debate is open to young professionals, students, leading experts, policy and decision makers in marine and offshore community who want to share their views and opinions about climate change.
Dr Paul Jukes, Advanced Engineering Manager, JP Kenny will chair the debate for young scientists and engineers challenging the presented statements:
Dr Vladimir Ryabinin of the World Climate Research Programme, and a well known scientist and respected expert in this field will give an introductory talk on climate change, and says:
“The IMarEST debate is a part of the famous Pacem in Maribus Conference devoted to women, youth and the sea. Kids and youth are the future of humankind; women care very much about kids and hence the future; and the ocean is key for life (including climate) and culture and itself a universe. At the debate, the dry science will be exposed to emotions of kids and concern of women, and it will provide a unique highly moral vantage point for looking at the climate change problem and its relation to the future of the ocean”.
Join a debate team at the PIM conference on Wednesday 7 November at the Pacem in Maribus XXXII...... Prizes awarded to the winning teams! Click here to find out who is involved in the debate teams so far and why they want to take part!
