Over the last two
years three classes of ship (AO, LPD and SVHO) have entered
service with Full Electric Propulsion (FEP); two more (LSD(A)
and Type 45) will join the fleet shortly. This paper reports
a Post Project Evaluation (PPE) to assess the virtual project
that might be termed ‘the introduction into service of
electric propulsion’ across these Classes; it draws on
common threads from all these projects and identifies lessons
for the future. It will briefly
describe each project (the scope of which covers all main
types of electric propulsion from commercial to pods to a
bespoke military solution); the 5 key and common lessons found
were: Integration, Electrical Expertise, Electrical Standards,
Technology De-Risking and Training. These will be discussed
and actions being taken to address them will be outlined.
