Anthropogenic noise and its impact on the marine environment remains an issue of concern within the maritime community. There have been a number of meetings to look at the different aspects of this issue from the policy required to regulate the emission of sound through to the science required to minimise its impact on the marine environment. This co-organised meeting will aim to build on the IACMST report Underwater Sound and Marine Life published in 2006 and will examine different aspects of the issue from the policy required to regulate the emission of sound through to the science required to understand and minimise its impact.
The conference programme will educate and inform, consisting of thought provoking plenary talks and periods of discussion. Selected speakers chosen for their expertise in specific areas will act as scene setters and will provide delegates with a balanced overview of the biological science involved, the physics involved (acoustics) and the over-arching applicable laws and policies.

| Alongside research and policy in the UK, the talks will also look at developments in regulation and science in the US and Europe. A wrap up session at the end of the day will be used to synthesise the issues and ideas discussed. Following the wrap up session it is planned that a Forum, whose establishment was recommended by the IACMST report, will be launched by Prof Howard Dalton, Chairman of IACMST.
