The IMarEST Stanley Gray Lectures
A unique ship - a unique solution

Peter Mason, Chief Engineer, Cutty Sark

Monday 9 July 2007
IMarEST HQ, 80 Coleman Street, London EC2R 5BJ

This talk will start with the history of the ship, including design features, and move onto how it came to survive, not only as the most famous, but also the best preserved example of its type. Then there is the story of its plight for the last 50 years, sitting in its dock in Greenwich with its burden of salt. This leads onto the steps to arrest the insidious decline and make the ship a dramatic visitor attraction, with the underlying intent of being able to pay for future conservation in a sustainable way. Finally, what has the fire done to the ship and the conservation project?
