GUILD OF BENEVOLENCE
of

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology

Membership Subscriptions, Donations and Gift Aid

In accordance with Guild Rules, membership subscriptions are reviewed annually and are currently set at £12.00 per year or £120.00 for Life membership with effect from 1st October 2008 will increase to £15.00 and £150.00 respectively.  Members of the Guild have voting rights at General Meetings and may stand for election to the Guild Committee of Management.  The Committee Members are the Trustees of the Guild.

IMarEST members who are not Members of the Guild may make voluntary donations to the Guild of £8.00 (or more) when they pay their Institute membership subscription.  When this is paid by direct debit the banking rules, unfortunately, prohibit the Institute from collecting a donation to the Guild at the same time.  Consequently, IMarEST members wishing to donate to the Guild by direct debit must complete a separate mandate in favour of the Guild of Benevolence.

The Guild Trustees endeavour to take advantage of the UK government's Gift Aid Rules. These enable the Guild to reclaim 28p tax for every £1.00 that a UK taxpayer subscribes or donates to the Guild. Should the subscriber or donor be a UK higher rate tax payer (40%), then he can claim back for himself the difference between the standard rate and his tax rate. There is no lower (or upper) limit on the amount a subscriber or donor can give. Provided that the person paying the money has paid sufficient UK Income or Capital Gains Tax in the year in which the payment is made the Guild can claim the tax back from the Inland Revenue.

If you would like to pay your donation or subscription to the Guild by direct debit, or to pledge subscriptions or donations under the Gift Aid scheme, please let the Guild know and the appropriate forms will be sent to you. The Gift Aid Pledge remains in place for as long as the payer wishes, and covers all payments made to the Guild of Benevolence.

Please contact the Guild office by telephone on 020 7382 2600 (direct line 020 7382 2638 or email guild@imarest.org.

RMS Titanic

To mark the 80th Anniversary in 1992 of the sinking of RMS Titanic, the Guild published a Commemorative Brochure as a tribute to the Engineering Staff, all of whom lost their lives in the tragedy.

With the current world wide interest in the Titanic, readers are reminded that this brochure is still available, and can be obtained, together with a coloured poster of the Titanic, for £8 which includes postage and packing. All proceeds from the sale of these items will go to the Guild funds. To obtain copies, please contact Lorraine Jordan on E-mail lorraine.jordan@imarest.org
