Guild helps fund pioneering operation

The Guild Of Benevolence has funded an operation that has enabled the son of an Institute member to hear for the first time.

Muhamad Durrani bin Nordin was born in 1985 with multiple syndromes, including Treacher Collins Syndrome, resulting in several deformities and severely impaired hearing. From his early days he has undergone many operations to correct these problems. One of the first was to cover his cleft pallet to enable him to swallow, and later his feet were corrected to enable him to walk. Yet in spite of several operations he could only hear some noises and had to communicate by sign language. Undaunted by his afflictions, he has worked hard at school — the Methodist Boys School in Kuala Lumpur — and sat his Lower School Certificate Examination only two years late.

The BAHA is the final step in ensuring that Durrani can lead an independent life, and the Guild is proud to have been able to assist him. Durrani (centre) is pictured here with his mother and Dr Lokman.

Following many tests it was decided that to enable him to hear, he needed to be provided with a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA). This is an expensive procedure never before carried out in Malaysia and unfortunately beyond the means of Durrani’s family. This is where the Guild of Benevolence has been able to help, and the Trustees of the Guild of Benevolence were pleased to fund the operation.

The initial procedure covered the abutment of a socket in the bone where his right ear should be. Dr Lokman Saim of the Malaysia National University Hospital performed this in October 2001, and when that operation had healed, the BAHA, which had to be imported from Sweden, was fitted to the socket in March 2002. The BAHA was instantly and outstandingly successful. Durrani can now safely travel to school alone on the Light Rail Transport system, and at last he is learning to speak. In January 2003 he started at a special needs school in Shah Alam. Durrani is a keen footballer and together with his younger brother Izdihar, who is his best friend, he supports Manchester United. He can now hear the roar of the crowd when watching them on TV.
