Associate (AIMarEST)

Associates are likely to be working in posts of supervisory responsibility in the design, management or execution of important work in a marine related profession.

To become an Associate, you will need to demonstrate to the Membership Committee that you meet the standards of competence and commitment laid down by Council for the category of Associate. Specifically, how you:

  • Use your knowledge and understanding to apply practical skills - You will need to be able to demonstrate that you have the know-how to do the job, and are able to think through the immediate requirements and use your experience to solve problems or improve processes.
  • Contribute to the development, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes, systems, scientific principles or services (depending on your specialisation) - You will need to be able to demonstrate how you contribute to one or more of these activities.
  • Accept and exercise personal responsibility - You will need to be able to demonstrate how you work reliably and effectively without close supervision and to the appropriate codes of practice, how you accept responsibility for the work of yourself and others and how you accept, allocate and supervise tasks effectively.
  • Use effective communication and interpersonal skills - You will need to be able to demonstrate your ability to use oral, written and electronic methods for communication and the extent to which you are able to work effectively with colleagues, clients, suppliers and the public. You will need to show you can contribute to discussions, present ideas, read and synthesise information and write different types of documents.
  • Make a personal commitment to an appropriate code of professional conduct, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment - You will need to be able to demonstrate your commitment to becoming part of your profession and to upholding the standards to which all members subscribe. You must show that you have read and understood the IMarEST's Codes and Rules of Professional Conduct. You will need to be able to demonstrate your understanding of and adherence to current safety requirements including examples of good practice that you adopt in your work and your ability to assess and minimise risk in specific projects. You will need to show how you observe good practice with regard to the environment. You will need to be able to demonstrate how you maintain your competence through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Applicants to the category of Associate should be at least twenty-one years of age.
