To become a Fellow of the IMarEST, you should, qualify for the categories of Member, Associate Member, or Associate and demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Membership Committee that you have an appropriate level of competence and commitment acquired through your experience and continuing professional development involving superior responsibility for the conceptual design, management or the execution of important work in a marine related profession, for a period of at least 5 years. You are likely to:
-
Possess a reputation in marine engineering, science, technology or other marine related discipline sustained over a number of years.
-
Possess a record of original or significant contribution to marine engineering, science, technology or other marine related profession.
-
Ideally possess some tangible recognition of eminence (e.g. a national honour or prize).
-
Have a declared affinity with the aims and objectives of the Institute and its Code of Conduct.
The assessment of whether or not a candidate holds a position of superior responsibility will always remain a matter of judgement. This judgement is based on the statements made by the candidate, the knowledge of their referee and the knowledge of individual members of the Membership Committee about the candidate's area of work.
Normally it would be expected that candidates for the category of Fellow would be leaders in their field with high technical (or scientific), financial and staff responsibilities. The quality of the staff controlled would also be a useful indicator. However, with the changing roles of engineers, scientists and technologists, and the growth in the number of small and medium sized enterprises, increasing importance is given to assessing the contribution a candidate makes to the overall success of the organisation he or she works for or directs.
The IMarEST is also welcoming into membership senior people from professions supporting marine engineering, science and technology (e.g. legal and insurance professionals, shipping and logistics professionals and others from a technical or scientific background but who are now involved in non-technical or non-scientific professional roles undertaken in a marine context). Leaders in these fields and others would also be candidates for the category of Fellow.
