Member (MIMarEST)

Members are likely to be working in posts of increased responsibility for the conceptual design, management or execution of important work in a marine related profession.

To become a Member, you will need to demonstrate to the Membership Committee that you meet the standards of competence and commitment laid down by Council for the category of Member. Specifically, how you:

  • Use a combination of general and specialist knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology or systems or sciences - You will need to be able to demonstrate that you maintain and extend a sound theoretical approach in enabling the introduction and exploitation of new and advancing knowledge and other relevant developments. You will also need to show how you engage in the creative and innovative development of (depending on your background) science, engineering or technology and in continuous improvement.
  • Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of marine sector problems - You will need to be able to demonstrate your ability to identify potential problems and opportunities; conduct appropriate research and select and develop best solutions; and implement solutions and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Provide commercial leadership - You will need to be able to demonstrate your ability to plan for effective project implementation; your competence in planning, budgeting, organising, directing and controlling tasks, people and resources; your ability to effectively lead teams and develop staff to meet changing needs and your ability to bring about continuous improvement through quality management.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills - You will need to be able to demonstrate your ability to communicate with others at all levels and to present and discuss proposals. You will also need to demonstrate personal and social skills.
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to professional standards, recognising your obligations to society, the profession and the environment - You will need to be able to demonstrate that you comply with the relevant codes of conduct for your profession and that you manage and apply safe systems of work. You will also need to show that you undertake activities in a way that contributes to sustainable development, and that you carry out Continuing Professional Development (CPD) necessary to maintain and enhance competence in the area in which you practice.

Applicants to the category of Member should be at least twenty-five years of age.
