To become a Graduate member you do not necessarily need to be a university graduate but you should:
If you are a PhD student you should apply for the Graduate category of membership and be eligible for a reduced rate of payment.
-
have completed a marine-related programme of further or higher accreditation that may be recognised or accredited by the IMarEST
-
be in the process of completing a programme of training and experiential learning that is accredited or approved by the IMarEST.
Note: Not everyone has the opportunity to undergo a formal programme of training and experiential learning (for example a workplace based graduate training programme, a modern apprenticeship or similar). The membership team can provide guidance on how you can structure and document your own training and learning to qualify for Graduate membership.
Student members are those enrolled on a marine related programme of further or higher education. The programme may be recognised or accredited by the IMarEST.
If you are a PhD student you should apply for the Graduate category of membership and be eligible for a reduced rate of payment.
Elective Member is the fastest route into membership. Elective Members will not receive designatory letters and are not professionally recognised, but can upgrade to further categories of membership within six months, while receiving all the other benefits and services of the IMarEST.
Affiliates are people who have an interest in the IMarEST and its work or who wish to contribute to the activities of the Institute in some way, but who are not able to apply for Corporate Member status, or who choose not to do so. Members of professional societies with which the Institute has a reciprocal arrangement may also be Affiliates.
Note: If you are a member of another professional society with which the IMarEST has an Affiliation Agreement or reciprocal arrangement, you may be exempt for some parts of the application process; please discuss your own circumstances with the Membership Department.
