Preparing your written report
The written report gives you the opportunity to summarise details of your technical, scientific and professional experience, responsibilities, competence and plans to maintain your competence.
The report should be a summary, in English, of your further/higher education, training and subsequent career development highlighting the key aspects of the activities in which you have been involved and identifying the responsibilities and accountabilities you have had has you have progressed through your career.
Your objective is to provide evidence that you meet the competence and commitment requirements for the membership category for which you are applying. The content of your report, for example, should be sufficient to convince a potential employer of your suitability to practice at this level. An enhanced CV, therefore, may be suitable if it is appropriately structured.
As a guide, typical submissions are about 2000-2500 words long. However, how you compile your report is up to you.
What to consider - think carefully about:
-
Jobs you have done
-
Projects you have been closely involved with
-
Responsibilities you have had
-
Courses you have attended
-
Experiences you have had
-
What you have learned from community activities
-
Your participation in professional activities
-
What qualifications/skills you have achieved
The Institute is not expecting you to be an expert at everything. You may not know all of the answers but you must know that there are questions to be asked. In a management role, you may not have the same expertise as a current hands-on practitioner for example, but you must understand the principles which underpin your work.
You now need to exercise some judgement. Which parts are your own work and can really illustrate your personal competence? Is your evidence at the right level and depth for the category of membership for which you are applying?
If you would like to see examples of recent successful written reports prepared by current members, please contact the membership department.
