Marine Engineer, Marine Engineering Technician, Chartered
Marine Scientist and Chartered Marine Technologist to its
members who are appropriately qualified.
As a ‘Licensed Body’
of the Science Council, and as a ‘Nominated and Licensed
Body’ of the Engineering Council (UK), the Institute
is also empowered to register its members, who are appropriately
qualified, as Chartered Scientists (CSci), Chartered Engineers
(CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) or Engineering Technicians
(EngTech).
Chartered Registration

will be required to achieve academic qualifications exemplified
by an accredited or approved master degree.

Guidelines for Engineering Council Registration
The Engineering Council
(UK) maintains the register of Chartered Engineers (CEng),
Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Engineering Technicians
(EngTech).
A marine engineer wishing
to register as CEng will require an appropriate academic
qualification recognised by the Institute in addition to
the professional competence and commitment requirements
for Member or Fellow.
A marine engineer wishing
to register as IEng will require an appropriate, academic
qualification recognised by the Institute in addition to
the professional competence and commitment requirements
for Associate Member.
A marine engineer wishing

qualification recognized by the Institute in addition to
the professional competence and commitment requirements
for Associate.
The
Institute can advise members on each of the appropriate,
academic qualifications required for CEng, IEng and EngTech.
Please email
the membership department for more information, or telephone
+44(0)20 7382 2600 during normal UK office hours.
The Engineering Council (UK) comprises representatives from
member institutions covering a very wide range of disciplines
and sets the standards for academic qualification and Initial
Professional Development (IPD).
The standards for each
of the registration categories have been carefully developed
over the years to meet the requirements of industry. Thus,
registration assures an employer that an employee has achieved
a recognised level of academic qualification and IPD whatever
the discipline. Membership of
the IMarEST can therefore provide the recognized professional
status that is demanded by many employers.
Candidates who have obtained
appropriate academic qualifications may register for Interim
Stage registration in the Chartered Engineer, Incorporated
Engineer and Engineering Technician registers. They may
also, if they wish, submit details of their IPD, prior to
completion, for approval by the Institute.
The Institute is also
empowered to accredit/approve academic courses and IPD programmes
acceptable for Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer
or Engineering Technician registration.

Guidelines for ‘Chartered
Scientist’ Applicants
As a Licensed Body of
the Science Council the Institute is empowered to register
its Chartered Marine Scientists, who are appropriately qualified,
as Chartered Scientists (CSci). The Science Council is an
independent body uniting the key Professional Institutions
and Learned Societies across science in the UK.
The award of Chartered
Scientist sets the individual practitioner at a senior level
within their profession. It demonstrates the achievement
of a higher-level education, but also the ability to practice
at an advanced level and the maintenance and continued progression
of scientific competencies and abilities. Becoming a Chartered
Scientist sends a clear signal to employers, colleagues
and the public as a whole about the quality of your scientific
knowledge, application and professionalism.
Requirements for Chartered Scientist
Applicants must satisfy
the requirements for registration with the IMarEST as a
Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci) see Chapter 7 of the
Membership Handbook. Such candidates will have achieved
at least a Master level degree or equivalent and have at
least four years post-graduate professional experience in
marine science. These requirements reflect the IMarEST requirements
for the category of Member. Applicants will be required
to undergo the Professional Review which consists of a written
report and interview. To this end Membership of the Institute
and the award of ‘CMarSci’ and ‘CSci’
are carried out simultaneously.
The annual registration
fee of £25.00 is payable on application. Please note
that the amount may increase for future years.
Revalidation
Successful applicants
will be entitled to use the designatory letters ‘CSci’
for a period of five years. Chartered Scientist registration
is available to those individuals who continue to practice
the advancement or application of science at a high level,
which is why continuing professional development (CPD) is
monitored every 5 years as part of a revalidation process.
