The IMarEST recognises that the training offered to Royal New Zealand Navy Marine Engineer Officers and Ratings is amongst the best in the world, with excellent professional development assessment and quality control mechanisms in place.

Consequently, under the license authority vested in it by the Engineering Council (UK), and in partnership with the RNZN, the IMarEST has created a special streamlined process for Marine Engineer Officers and Ratings to apply for IMarEST Professional Membership and Registration as Chartered (CEng, CMarEng), Incorporated (IEng, IMarEng), and Technician (EngTech, MarEngTech), depending on their level of experience.

The IMarEST’s Streamlined Route to membership and registration requires only the completion of a short application form, confirmation of RNZN qualifications and copies of academic certificates. This means that, with a few exceptions:

MEOs, on passing the MCQ, will be eligible for election as an IMarEST Associate Member (AMIMarEST) with registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and/or Incorporated Marine Engineer (IMarEng).

On appointment to either a sea going charge post, or upon the recommendation by Director Marine Engineering upon taking up a third professional appointment post MCQ, as a Substantive Lieutenant Commander, MEO’s will be eligible for election as an IMarEST Member (MIMarEST) with  Registration as a Chartered Engineer and/or Chartered Marine Engineer (CMarEng).

CPOMETs, on promotion, will be eligible for election as an Associate (AIMarEST) with registration as an Engineering Technician
(Eng Tech)
and/or Marine Engineering
Technican (MarEngTech)
.

Following promotion to WOMET, they will be
eligible for election as an Associate Member
(AMIMarEST)
and for registration as an
Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and/or
Incorporated Marine Engineer (IMarEng).

Full details can be found in RNZN Navy Order 36/07

Please note that this streamlined route is a standard route. Experienced people with early career training may well be eligible for membership and registration sooner, but they will need to go through the usual IMarEST professional review process.
