TWO NEW REGIONAL CO-ORDINATORS FOR IMarEST YOUNG MEMBERS’ NETWORK

The Young Members Network of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has an important role to play in promoting careers in the maritime industry, and is delighted to announce the appointment of two new network regional co-ordinators, one is launching the Network in Nigeria, and the other is taking up the role in the UK’s Southern Joint Branch.

“We are delighted to welcome both Aminu Bagudu Ibrahim and James Goodship as regional co-ordinators, and are delighted that Aminu is launching the Young Members’ Network within our existing Nigerian branch,” says IMarEST’s chief executive, Keith Read CBE. “The marine engineering industry is vital to the world economy, and attracting young blood to the industry is key to ensuring the ongoing health and expansion of the industry. Young men like Aminu and James are ideally placed to spread the word about the attractions of a career in the industry to those still at school or at University. We wish them every enjoyment in their new role, and will be supporting them in every way we can.”

Aminu Bagudu Ibrahim is an MSc graduate of oil and gas engineering from The Robert Gordon University, UK. He also studied marine and mechanical engineering technology at the St. Lawrence College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario Canada. He now works with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation where he is a Project Engineer. He has worked in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas as well as the upstream sector, and has been involved in major oil and gas development onshore and offshore including the largest PSC offshore development, the Bonga FPSO project with SNEPCO.

Aminu’s position in NNPC offers him opportunities to network with other professionals in IOCs through vendor and contractor project offices attachments. He was introduced to IMarEST during his studies at Aberdeen where he became involved with the activities of the Young Members Network. He is enthusiastic to launch and coordinate the Young Members Network in the Nigerian Branch, and in this respect will be working closely with Alex Peters the Honorary Secretary of the Nigeria Branch.

James Goodship is the newly appointed Young Members’ Network Regional Co-ordinator for the Southern Joint Branch. He is a graduate marine engineer working for VT Group at Portsmouth Shipbuilding Facility. He studied Marine Technology at Plymouth University where he learnt more about the Institute through the Network, attending several visits to Devonport Dockyard, before later completing a sandwich placement with DML. He is keen to encourage young people of all ages to consider careers in the marine industry. His position within the VT Group Graduate Scheme offers him a wide network of contacts in shipbuilding and the excellent support provided by the company promoting the industries in schools and universities provides a promising outlet for his enthusiasm.
