GETTING THAT CV SPOT ON AT ALL-ENERGY!

There’s nothing more important for job applications than a well-written CV, so with this in mind, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) is holding a “CV Workshop” on their stand at All-Energy ’08, the UK’s largest renewable energy exhibition and conference.

“Our CV Workshop is being sponsored by Castrol Marine as part of the valuable ongoing careers programme they are running with the Institute, and is being organised in association with The Robert Gordon University (RGU),” explains Suki Kalsi, IMarEST’s Head of Corporate Marketing and PR. “Students from RGU, other universities and college students in their final year are invited to our stand (E40) from 14.00hrs on 21 May to find out how they can best craft their CV to catch the eye of future employees. The workshop is not restricted solely to students, I am sure that there will be others attending the show eager to benefit from the advice given by the experts who will be with us that afternoon.

“Those attending our workshop will. of course, then be able to attend the All-Energy conference session devoted to ‘Skills – getting the right people - The great debate’ (start time 16.00hrs) and also the networking reception taking place in the show’s Jobs Zone at 17.30hrs. As attendance at All-Energy is free to attend for all with a business/professional interest in renewables, and these young people are certainly aiming to have that involvement, an afternoon spent in the show, first on our stand and then in the conference, will prove to be a real win:win session for them. We are delighted to be working with Castrol and RGU on this initiative.”

IMarEST runs an extremely active Young Members’ Network (YMN) that connects students, graduates, postgraduates and professionals with the IMarEST. It is a vibrant group of individuals who are either studying on marine related courses or working in shipping, offshore oil and gas or marine science related sectors; and its activities support education, lifelong learning and professional development connecting young members worldwide.

“We have a Chairman of the YMN who works in industry and knows at first hand what it’s like for students and graduates to have recently left education and be looking for their first job,” explains Abi Virjee of IMarEST’s YMN HQ. “Those who have just graduated find it extremely helpful when they first start work and the Network supports them in their early stage career needs. We link with other young member groups around the world who are looking to meet other professionals or students. In addition to Aberdeen, we have active young members’ networks in Southampton and in Houston, Texas; Greece; Singapore and Malaysia.”

Young members’ activities include technical visits and presentations; debates and forums; seminars and workshops; and social networking and events. It operates a graduate mentor scheme, facilitates lifelong learning and education; provides access to vital resources such as the IMarEST Employment service and Marine Information Centre; and offers support through IMarEST scholarships and Young Member Awards.

The IMarEST is the leading professional body for the global marine community. It promotes the scientific development and inter-disciplinary understanding of marine engineering, science and technology and has some 15,000 members in over a hundred countries. During All-Energy ‘08 the IMarEST stand (E40) will feature show offers on the Institute’s magazines including ‘Journal of Offshore Technology‘, ‘Journal of Operational Oceanography’ and an invaluable publication - ‘Design of Safety & Marine Offshore Systems’; and also promote the benefits of membership of the Institute for individuals and of the innovative ‘Marine Partners’ scheme for companies.

Further information on all aspects of IMarEST’s work is available on the stand at All-Energy, and at www.imarest.org and from suki.kalsi@imarest.org or Samantha.dawkins@imarest.org
