IMarEST’s ROLE WITHIN THE UN’s ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

The Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) has been recommended for special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council at the recent meeting of the UN Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The 19-member Committee recommends general, special or roster status with the Council according to such criteria as the applicant’s mandate, governance and financial regime.  Organizations enjoying general and special consultative status can attend meetings of the Council and circulate statements. Angola, Burundi, China, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Egypt, Guinea, India, Israel, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Romania, Russian Federation, Sudan, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States are all members of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations.

“We are delighted that the Committee has made this recommendation,” says Keith Read CBE, chief executive of IMarEST. “The Institute has significant links with many organisations that benefit members and their wide range of interests, such observer status at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, NGO status at the International Maritime Organization, and membership of the UK Maritime Forum and Society of Maritime Industries; and this latest recommendation enables us to spread far and wide information on marine engineering, science and technology all of which play a vital role in so many aspects of the world economy and well being.”

IMarEST has some 15,000 members in over a hundred countries and 49 active branches around the world.
