BENEFITING FROM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – IMarEST Oi08 SEMINAR
Research undertaken by Matt King, Regional Coordinator for the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) South East England and London & Home Counties Branch Young Members’ Network has identified ‘learning about professional development’, and ‘how to gain chartered status’ as topics of particular interest to branch members, especially members of the vibrant IMarEST Young Members’ Network.
With this in mind, a free-to-attend workshop on the duo of key topics has been organised to take place during the major Oceanology International (Oi08) exhibition and conference on the afternoon of 13 March. The IMarEST Young Members’ Network supports the early careers of marine and offshore professionals.
“It makes sound sense to hold the workshop on the Thursday of Oi08,” explains IMarEST’s chief executive, Keith Read CBE. “That is when students from universities all over the country will be visiting the exhibition and conference to find out about career opportunities in marine science and technology.
“Thanks to our workshop, they will be able to find out more about matters that affect their ongoing career, as can existing members of our Young Members Network from home and overseas, and exhibition and conference attendees of all ages eager to obtain advice on professional development. We are looking forward to a highly stimulating afternoon. Everyone is welcome at South Gallery – Room 8 on the afternoon of 13 March.”
The formal part of the afternoon will include information on IMarEST membership and routes to gaining chartered status; a presentation from an IMarEST member involved in Professional Review Interviews explaining the procedure and what to expect; and short talks from recently chartered members of the IMarEST (both Engineers and Scientists). Then there will be a speed networking session featuring short ten-minute group sessions with recently chartered members offering a chance to ask questions, to see examples of how IPD (initial professional development) evidence is recorded, and to look through members’ own IPD folders; as well as meeting IMarEST members in a relaxed atmosphere.
Further information on the work of the Young Members’ Network is available from www.imarest.org
