REWARDING RESPONSE TO INAUGURAL SIR DONALD GOSLING AWARD

The authors of thirteen presentations at the 9th International Naval Engineering Conference and Exhibition (INEC 2008) are in contention for the inaugural Sir Donald Gosling Awards. The Awards, open to INEC authors under the age of 40, for the quality of their paper and its presentation, consists of three prizes (first prize £5,000; second prize £2,500; third prize £1,500); these will be presented at the event being held in Hamburg, Germany 1-3 April 2008.

“We are delighted by this tremendous response to our invitation to INEC speakers, and grateful to Sir Donald Gosling, long a supporter of the Royal Navy, for lending his name to this new award,” says Keith Read CBE, chief executive of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, organisers of INEC. “The eligible authors from industry, academia and navies come from Germany, The Netherlands, France and the UK and between them are presenting a fascinating collection of papers. We thank them, and all other speakers, for their contribution at this important event for the defence industry; and Captain John Newell MBE, Royal Navy the INEC conference chairman whose committee has put together such a compelling conference.

“It is not just young authors who have been quick to respond to the INEC invitation,” says Keith Read. “Delegates have registered from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and USA to take part in the conference with its 70 presentations by authors speaking to the theme ‘Embracing the Future’. Our delegates are drawn from commercial and military ship operators, designers and shipbuilders, classification societies, machinery and equipment manufacturers, universities and a wide range of other organisations.”

Rear Admiral Kevin McCoy of the US Navy, and Rear Admiral Bob Love, CVF Team Leader, Ministry of Defence head the international line up of speakers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden, UK and USA. Sessions at the three-day event are devoted to Concepts; Signatures and Modelling; Propulsion; Responding to external influences; Through life support systems; System design; Equipment design; Ownership; Equipment support; and Damage control and fire fighting.

“The Sir Donald Gosling Award presentations are spread evenly throughout the event and the list of titles provides an insight into some of the topics coming under the conference spotlight,” explains Keith Read. “We are delighted that Vice Admiral Sir Robert Hill KBE, FREng and an Honorary Fellow of IMarEST, who will give a closing summary at the conference, will be presenting the Awards.”

Topics being covered by the young authors are:

  • F125 – the new frigate for the German Navy
  • Submarines for the future, a new design model
  • New concepts in mine warfare
  • Hybrid electric propulsion for Naval Auxiliaries
  • Putting the power into CVF - integrating the prime movers behind the IFEP System
