INTERNATIONAL LINE UP FOR INEC 2008

Rear Admiral Kevin McCoy of the US Navy, and Rear Admiral Bob Love, CVF Team Leader, Ministry of Defence head the international line up of speakers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden, UK and USA at the 9th International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC 2008) being held in Hamburg, Germany 1-3 April 2008.

The three-day conference is organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), held under the patronage of Rear Admiral (ret) Lutje Schipholt, Rear Admiral Nigel Guild, and Vice Admiral Sir Robert Hill, and sponsored by Rolls-Royce, BMT Defence Services, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Germanischer Lloyd, Converteam, and The Office of Naval Research and will see the presentation of the inaugural Sir Donald Gosling Award.

“I am delighted to hear that 12 presentations are in the running for the inaugural Sir Donald Gosling Award at INEC 2008,” says IMarEST’s chief executive, Keith Read CBE. “All INEC 2008 authors under the age of 40 are eligible for the Awards, which consist of three prizes (first prize £5,000; second prize £2,500; third prize £1,500). We are extremely grateful to Sir Donald, long a supporter of the Royal Navy, for lending his name to this new award at such an important event for the defence industry.”

Captain John Newell MBE, Royal Navy, INEC conference chairman, looks forward to this spring’s event: “The many challenges facing our navies continue to demand ever more resourceful solutions and approaches, and we will certainly be hearing about these in April.  This year’s INEC chalks up a very definite ‘first’. We had such a good response to the call for papers that we are staging three parallel streams on the second day. We have a very full programme and the papers will provide a truly international perspective on many current issues, ranging from capability management to contractor logistics support.

“With its theme ‘Embracing the Future’ INEC 2008 incorporates the operation, future design, integration and support of vessels in the naval environment. The programme explores the balance between evolving current practice, revolutionary or novel alternatives and practical experience.

“Aimed at commercial and military ship operators, designers and shipbuilders, classification societies, machinery and equipment manufacturers, universities and a wide range of other organisations, INEC particularly looks at ways and means of capitalising on the benefits from commercial experience.”

The three day event is supported by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Nautical Institute, American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers.

Day by day at INEC
Following the opening session in which Rear Admiral McCoy will be speaking and the scene-setting plenary session on Day One which sees an international line up from Germany, Greece, The Netherlands and the UK, INEC 2008 will break into two parallel sessions ‘Concepts’ and ‘Signatures and Modelling’; with a conference reception in the INEC exhibition area completing the day.

“Hamburg has been chosen as the logical venue for the 2008 event as it remains one of the leading European centres for naval shipbuilding. INEC was last held there in 2000 and proved highly successful. The CCH (Congress Center Hamburg) is a superb venue, right in the middle of the city centre,” explains Captain Newell.

Day Two sees six packed streams taking place – ‘Propulsion’; ‘Responding to External Influences’; ‘Through Life Support Systems’; ‘System Design’; ‘Equipment Design’; and ‘Ownership’ before delegates and speakers repair to the Hamburg Stock Exchange for the conference reception and dinner.

The third day opens with parallel session on ‘Equipment Support’; and ‘Control and Fire Fighting’ before the closing plenary session and the presentation of the inaugural Sir Donald Gosling Award.
