IMarEST’s ROLE IN THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY – ONS PROVIDES A CHANCE TO FIND OUT MORE
Experts from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) welcome the opportunity to explain the extensive services the Institute offers both individuals and companies involved in the offshore oil and gas industry when it exhibits at ONS 2008. (Hall J, Stand no 1010/9)
The IMarEST is the professional membership body for all science, engineering and technology professionals involved in a marine or offshore environment or maritime business sector. Today the Institute has some 15,000 members in over a hundred countries across the world; as well as close on 40 ‘Marine Partners’ – company membership offering a wide range of benefits tailored to each organisation’s needs.
Within the offshore sector individual members include professionals involved in a wide rang of activity including oil and gas exploration and production; environmental and risk analysis and management; subsea engineering and technology; renewables – offshore wind, wave and tidal; hydrography; oceanography; supply and dive support vessels; geology; geophysics; naval architecture; vessel support throughout the offshore fleet; infrastructure development; decommissioning; research and development; all engineering disciplines; law; insurance; and training and development.
“The Institute has recently published a brochure explaining our role in the offshore industry, and I would urge visitors to ONS 2008 to pick up a copy from the IMarEST stand,” says chief executive, Keith Read CBE. “Through it they will learn what professional recognition through the IMarEST signifies – with Colin Grant Advisor – Metocean, BP Exploration explaining the significance of the designation ‘Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci).
“Dr Paul Jukes, Principal Engineer, JP Kenny describes how gaining professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) has helped him progress his career both as a design engineer and as a project engineer; and Ian Leggett, Head of Metocean Services, Shell UK Exploration and Production explains that ‘The potential for Shell staff to attain professional recognition (CMarSci, CEng, CMarTech) is important for individuals in terms of their personal and professional credibility and standing, and their ongoing development. Competency Based Development is a key enabler for people to progress within Shell. Ben Saunders, our Education & Training Co-ordinator will be on the stand at ONS to explain the role that our Institute can play in these vital areas.”
Of special interest to offshore professionals
Stuart Coull, Editor of ‘Journal of Offshore Technology’ will be on the stand to talk about his publications and others in the IMarEST ‘stable’; which includes ‘Marine Engineers Review’ (MER); and ‘Marine Scientist’ as well as technical and scientific proceedings – ‘Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology’; ‘Journal of Marine Design and Operations’ and ‘The Journal of Operational Oceanography’.
The Institute offers a wide range of services for marine and offshore professionals including a careers and recruitment services; the International Directory of Marine Consulting; technical awards; international networks – with 50 branches around the world; the Young Members’ Network; and a wide range of conferences and lectures and social events. ONS 2008 attendees will be able to become ‘Elective Members’ actually at the show and immediately receive membership benefits. Elective membership is an initial category of membership - with IMarEST encouragement, many will upgrade to professionally recognised categories of membership in due course.
