INSTITUTE SUPPORT FOR AQUACULTURE

A wealth of international aquaculture information will be shared by delegates and exhibitors at the forthcoming Skretting Australasian Aquaculture Conference 2006 (Adelaide - 27-30 August). The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology - IMarEST (Stand 78), will be highlighting information from around the world on topics as varied as the use of remotely operated vehicles, the black pearl industry, harmful algal blooms, and on the wild v farmed salmon debate.

"The international IMarEST, with its 15,000+ members around the world, has a number who are actively involved in aquaculture," explains Norman Farmer, Executive Director of IMarEST ANZSPAC (Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific) Division, one of 47 such IMarEST Divisions around the globe. "These members feed information to 'The Marine Scientist' one of the Institute's invaluable journals . Recent articles have highlighted the broad nature of aquaculture across the globe.

"We will have copies of all the relevant issues at Skretting Australasian Aquaculture. These will include the current issue, which carries a short technology article on the use of Seaeye Falcon ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) in Australian salmon aquaculture; and the May/June issue that featured both the black pearl industry in the Cook Islands and harmful algal blooms and their effects on aquaculture in the US. We've also had a letter from a reader on the scientific evidence for health benefits of wild versus farmed salmon - a debate that I am sure Skretting delegates will be eager to debate. We're looking forward to four days of stimulating discussion."

IMarEST has recently received news that HRH The Princess Royal (HRH Princess Anne) has followed in the footsteps of her father (HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh) and accepted the invitation to become an Honorary Fellow of the Institute.
