Asset Integrity – The Corrosion Perspective Cross Industry Issues

The true costs of the effects of corrosion remain hidden in large sectors of industry, often in large operational and maintenance budgets. In these sectors the driving force for the development and use of modern asset integrity tools has not been strong. The reticence to inappropriately publicise the areas where corrosion has presented an unacceptable financial burden, the hidden cost and the cross-industry desire not to publicise short comings have not assisted in the free passage of information.

The wraps are off when the two-day international conference ‘Asset Integrity – The Corrosion Perspective Cross Industry Issues’ is held 15-16 February at the City Conference Centre in the heart of the City of London. Organised by the UK Section of NACE International in cooperation with The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), the conference aims to give all stakeholders an opportunity to access current information on the application of both existing and emerging corrosion monitoring techniques, and will undoubtedly provide a much needed stimulus for effective and efficient technology transfer.

NACE International is a major international corrosion society with a strong presence in the oil and gas sectors, and the IMarEST has proven strengths in marine engineering, technology and science in the offshore and shipping sectors.

“As one would expect, the members of both organisations have detailed knowledge and experience with the application of corrosion prevention and control techniques,” explains Keith Read CBE, Director General of the IMarEST. “We believe that, with the help of more than 25 highly relevant speakers, this event will help open delegates’ eyes to the hidden costs of corrosion and encourage cross-industry sharing of information.”

The first conference session on Day One will be opened by Dr Paulette Sidky, Chairman of NACE (UK Section). Don Harrop, E&P Technology Group, BP Exploration, will chair the ‘Setting the Scene’ session giving an overview and this will be followed by specialist papers on the marine surveying of ships; risk strategy/asset management in oil and gas environments; asset cost performance management; asset integrity – corrosion risks; and gaining knowledge from uncertainty – managing ageing infrastructure in a regulated environment.

Keith Lewis of Shell Global Solutions will give an overview and chair the session devoted to current technologies and their application, where topics under consideration will be as diverse as NDT technologies on transportable gas cylinders; corrosion under insulation and inspection techniques; field monitoring for bacterial corrosion – a pathetic effort?; environmental pressures on the continued use of chemicals for corrosion control; reasons for performing plant monitoring in the nuclear power industry; corrosion management and total life costs – a water treatment perspective; and integrity management by cathodic protection.

The whole of the second day of the conference, chaired by David Shaw, Committee Member, NACE (UK Section), is devoted to developing technologies and techniques, with high resolution metal loss techniques, high resolution corrosion monitoring, acoustic emission, hydrogen permeation measurement, guided wave technology, shot and laser peening, and ICCP all coming under the conference spotlight. The IMarEST’s President Dr Bil Loth will chair the open forum before George Hayes, President of NACE International provides a summary and concluding remarks.
