There’s ‘open house’ at the free networking evening being held 14 June to launch the new Hellenic Joint Branch IMarEST Young Members’ Network designed to support educational and early stage career needs for students and young marine professionals.

The network will form an integral element of the already established Greek Joint branch of The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) which has over 600 members.

“Young engineers and scientists are the lifeblood of the marine industry, and we can play an important role in their development,” explains IMarEST (The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology) Chief Executive, Keith Read CBE. “We are delighted that the Joint Hellenic Branch is launching a Young Members’ Network in their region.

“Both the Chairman, Peter Leontis FRINA and the Honorary Secretary, Damianos Los CEng FIMarEST have been instrumental in the development of the new network and the first Hellenic IMarEST student award, forming a new committee to judge the award, creating guidelines and working closely with IMarEST headquarters. John Prousalidis, Lecturer at the National Technical University of Athens has been working with students to make them aware of the benefits they can gain from joining the IMarEST, and the Greek branch, and thus encouraging them to engage with local industry.

“Being part of the Young Members’ Network marks a young member’s first step towards Professional Recognition and the route to becoming a Chartered Engineer, Scientist or Technologist. The Network provides our young members with networking opportunities, access to worldwide industry contacts and to one of the largest marine libraries in the world, as well as career support and advice.”

Peter Leontis, Chair of the Greek Joint Branch of IMarEST will welcome guests to the networking evening at The Yacht Club of Greece (Microlimano, Pireaus). There will then be an introduction to the Young Members’ Network in Greece, and Mr Valassakis (the longest serving member of the Greek Joint Branch) will present the first IMarEST Hellenic Annual Student Award, following which the recipient will present his (or her) thesis in the form of a 20 minute presentation. A team of four students will then give a presentation on fuel cells (electrified systems). The rest of the evening will be dedicated to networking – a vital element for all young professionals.

Future activities planned for the new Network include a series of regular social and technical events, a post/undergraduate event (during Posidonia in June 2008) and a Young Members Student Awards Ceremony also in June 2008.
