From washing machines to Ferraris, from baked beans to petrol, all have been transported by ship; indeed, over 90% of the world’s trade is carried onboard ships – and it stands to reason that where there’s a ship there will be marine engineers. So it is logical that the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) should be a strong supporter of World Maritime Day 2007, which honours the vital contribution that the shipping industry makes to world trade.
On September 27th 2007, the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and the International Maritime Pilots Association will jointly host a celebration to mark World Maritime Day onboard the HQS Wellingto n to showcase the contribution made by UK-based institutions in support of the international shipping industry. Nearly 40 organisations with strong maritime links will take part promoting the concepts that the sea’s the future for a great career; the sea’s the future for efficient transportation; and the sea’s the future for clean, renewable energy generation.
“These concepts tie in with the International Maritime Organization’s theme for this year’s World Maritime Day of ‘ response to current environmental challenges’,” explains IMarEST’s Chief Executive, Keith Read CBE. “With a strong and global Young Members’ Network and instigator of events at home and overseas on climate change; and with members closely involved in the most environmentally friendly mode of transport and in developing marine renewable energy devices and solutions, IMarEST is very directly involved in areas strongly related to the IMO’s chosen theme; and applaud the initiative of our hosts in organising this special day.”
A number of VIP guests will be visiting the event throughout the day and including the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization and the Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord; in addition members of the general public of all ages are invited aboard HQS Wellington.
