The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) will take an active role in finding Britain’s Best Maritime Technology Student when it hosts the judging of this category in the annual SET awards (Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year) on 20 September.
“We are delighted to once again play a part in this important and prestigious award scheme for undergraduates,” says IMarEST’s chief executive, Keith Read CBE. “The Awards publicly recognise exceptional achievements of both students and universities, and also help to focus attention on the country’s need to produce ever more scientists, engineers and technologists. The three students who have been short listed for the maritime technology award certainly have an interesting range of subjects to talk about to the judges when they meet at IMarEST headquarters.”
The short listed students are Chris Plant for ‘Sub-Sea Electrical Connection System for Offshore Renewables’ from Lancaster University; Ewan Porteous for ‘Wave-like Propulsion of Small Marine Craft’ from Loughborough University; and Philip Siddorn for ‘Wave Energy Absorption By Arrays of Oscillating Bodies’ from the University of Oxford
The ‘Best Maritime Student’ award is sponsored by Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust. Lloyd’s Register is one of IMarEST’s Marine Partners, a membership network for organisations operating in the marine and offshore sectors. The judges on 20 September are all from Lloyd’s Register:- Francis Udom, Project Engineer (FPSO Group, Integrity Services department) who chairs IMarEST’s Young Members Network is representing IMarEST on the panel; John Carlton represents Lloyd’s Register; and Jacqui Buchan represents the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).
In all there are 15 awards for students in different categories as well as the coveted GKN Award for the Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year and the SAGE Award for the Lecturer of the Year. All are presented at a spectacular ceremony on 20 September that brings together hundreds of technology students and academics, as well as senior figures from industry, government, science and the media.
