The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) is delighted to be playing an active role in the SubSeaTECH 2007 being held by its St Petersburg Branch (BIMarEST) this week. Not only is the Institute exhibiting at this new event, but its 105 th President, Dr David Wynford (‘Wyn’) Williams CB, PhD, CMarEng, CPhys FIMarEST, FInstP spoke in the opening session on 25 June.
“SubSeaTECH 2007 is an extremely impressive initiative undertaken by our very active St Petersburg Branch,” he explained. “It has the active participation of St Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SMTU), the Scientific and Technical Society of Shipbuilders of the Russian Federation, and is being held in association with our MEST partner The Society for Underwater Technology. I commend them for their efforts and am enjoying meeting many of their members during my stay in St Petersburg.
“I have been very much looking forward to taking part in the opening session, to presenting some well-deserved awards, and to enjoying many of the presentations. These cover a wide and fascinating range of subsea activities, and the international organising committee has done a tremendous job in putting together the programme. I am not at all surprised to hear that delegates are travelling from all over the world to attend the event.
"I am pleased that one of the keynote presentations today will be given by Dr Paul Jukes CEng FIMarEST to whom IMarEST has just awarded the President’s Commendation for his hard work in the UK at the South East England Branch, for his work on behalf of the global Young Members’ Network and now as chairman of the U.S. Gulf Coast Branch. His achievements are legendary, and he is the youngest member to be honoured in this way.”
SubSeaTECH2007 is being held in St-Petersburg from 25-28 June 2007 and is timed at the 3rd International Maritime Defense Show. Further information is at http://www.subseatech2007.smtu.ru/
