Three impressive keynote speakers - Rear Admiral Kevin M. McCoy of the US Navy; Stephen Payne OBE from Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding; and Captain Jim Syring of the US Navy will be speaking at the 10 th anniversary All Electric Ship Conference (AES 2007), being held in London next month. Between them, they will demonstrate the breadth of use of the All Electric Ship concept.

“As AES 2007 chairman I am delighted at the involvement of all three keynote speakers who will cover the latest developments in both the military and commercial AES fields,” says Paul Norton FIMarEST, the Chief Marine Engineering Electrical in the Defence Equipment and Support organisation of the UK Ministry of Defence. “This, combined with the high quality of papers from many AES participants, will give a very broad and up-to-date review of this fast moving technology area.”

Spotlight on the keynote speakers

Paul Norton explains: “Rear Admiral McCoy is the Deputy Commander for Ship Design, Integration and Engineering in the Naval Sea Systems command of the United States Navy (NAVSEA 05) and is expected to be talking about AES and related technologies from the USN perspective.

“Stephen Payne’s keynote address will turn attention to the commercial market as he talks about the megaliner Queen Mary 2, which is the largest application of an all electric ship in the commercial arena as well as being the longest, tallest and widest passenger ship ever built. She is 1,132 feet long, displaces 150,000 tons, has 2,620 passengers and 1,250 crew, with 80MW of propulsion power, and Stephen, as naval architect and project manager of this prestigious liner, was responsible for her design and overseeing her construction.

“Our third keynote speaker is Captain Jim Syring, USN who is the DDG1000 Destroyer program manager who will be talking on the latest USN warship, the DDG1000. This is the United States Navy’s 21 st Century multi-mission destroyer, which will incorporate the most advanced All Electric Ship technologies so far developed. The destroyers will be 600ft long, displace some 14,000 tonnes, have a crew of 174 and some 80MW of shaft power.”

Compelling sessions offer a complete AES review

In addition to plenary sessions at the start and finish of the conference, sessions over the two days will look at Naval AES, AES Design and Simulation, Auxiliary Systems, AES System Analysis, Submarines and the AC – DC Debate; AES Operational Support; Advanced Technology; and AES Lifecycle and involve nearly 50 presentations by speakers from France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA.

David Mattick OBE, who manages the Electric Ship Technology Demonstrator for Converteam and is presently undertaking de-risking trials of the Type 45 Destroyer power and propulsion system for the MoD believes that: “This is an exciting time to be involved in the marine electrical industry. Power electronics is opening up new approaches to electrical generation and distribution systems, motors and converters as well as the systems that control them.” He considers AES 2007 to be “a chance to discuss the opportunities arising from these new approaches with practitioners involved in the research, design, building, testing, operating and support phases of commercial and warships’ life; a truly unique opportunity.”

AES 2007 is organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and supported by Société de l’Electricité, de l’Electronique, et des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication (SEE) and being held 25-26 September at the Royal College of Physicians Conference Centre, Regent’s Park, London.

Active sponsor

Converteam is sponsoring the two-day event. As Dr Makhlouf Benatmane the Navy Market Leader for Converteam, who will be chairing the Advanced Technology session explains: “The All Electric Ship conferences are becoming ‘must attend events’ for all those involved in the maritime industry. AES 2007 is no different and is promising to be stimulating, educational and inspirational. The title speaks for itself ‘Vision Redrawn – Recording the experience, recognising the ambition, refining the balance’. Converteam is pleased to sponsor and be associated with such a prestigious event.

“The conference represents an excellent opportunity to listen to many experts from industry and academia on various subjects, make contacts with old and new acquaintances, and explore opportunities to further the all electric ship concept even more. I very much look forward to AES 2007 and to meeting many of the attendees.”

The AES 2007 exhibition runs in parallel with the conference and will provide delegates with an exciting insight into the latest developments of this technology; and the AES 2007 poster session with presentations from The Netherlands, Nigeria, Sweden, UK and the USA also runs throughout the event.
