Senior Electrical Design Engineer for ships - with experience in marine/offshore industry

A Dutch based Marine division of a multi-national company have created a vacancy for a senior electrical design engineer to resource the company's contribution to a Navy building program (e.g. Mars, JCTS, CVF, FSC, etc) in the coming 20 years in conjunction with current programs like LSD(A) and possible export projects (Holly, Brave, Oman, etc). To support sales, clients and to start with initial design work the capacity of existing engineering team has to be increased.

Skills

• Electrical engineering at Bsc/Msc level or comparable
• 10 years of relevant experience (electrical design engineering in shipbuilding)
• Problem (functional vs costs) analysis
• Excellent knowledge of design/engineering process.
• Knowledge of HV/LV generation/distribution, platform automation, bridge systems and electrical installation will be an advantage
• Knowledge of relevant standards and norms in marine environment (e.g. Lloyds, DNV, NES, etc)
• Basic administrative skills.
• Knowledge of CAD tools (preferably EPLAN), databases (Oracle) and office automation (MS-offices)
• Able to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with technicians and non-technicians.
• Man-management; to lead / coach a group of 4-8 engineers.

Duties

To design – without outside help – basic electrical design of ships; deliverable is set of block diagrams or draft/concept/1st issue single line diagrams. This job includes at least the following duties:

• Identify all relevant requirements (customer, standards, norms, rules). Try to relax cost/risk driving requirements.
• Set – and get agreed - preconditions for electrical design process; monitor preconditions during process.
• Specify the technical solution (concept design; block diagram) of the electrical systems that is (just) is compliant with customer requirements and fully (as complete as possible) compliant with characteristics of systems and construction preferences. Identify commercial/technical ambiguities, risks and opportunities.
• Present/discuss/improve solution (block diagrams) to client , certifying bodies and - internally - to system and construction teams.
• Detail requirements / set specification of power generation/distribution system, alarm and monitoring system, electrical propulsion and bridge (navigation/communication and motion control) systems.
• Give technical support to and communicate with client and other teams (system design, installation engineering and construction).
• Support/coach/control 3-4 supporting engineers and draftsmen.
• Evaluate design and process internally during and at completion of projects.
