Salary: PS24-26 $64,729 - $69,049, Department of Marine & Ports Services
The Government of Bermuda wishes to recruit an innovative and experienced individual to fill the post of Radio Officer/RCC Controller. Through the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, Rescue Co-ordination Centre/Bermuda Radio provides a marine search and rescue service, vessel traffic surveillance, a listening watch on marine distress frequencies, and general marine communication services as required.
The duties of the Radio Officer include watch-keeping on a shift basis, as well as the following:
- maintaining a continuous watch on international maritime frequencies [4,125 KHz, 2,182 KHz, VHF Channel 16 and frequencies associated with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) A1/A2 compliant coast station];
- operating a Vessel Traffic Surveillance (VTS) radar system with associated AIS and radio direction finding, integrated to assist in the regulation of marine traffic in Bermuda waters;
- investigating distress alerts, and initiating and co-ordinating Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in conjunction with foreign agencies when necessary;
- providing Marine Safety Information to mariners according to a published schedule;
- liaising with local and overseas Government agencies with respect to ship salvage, pollution, fisheries matters and enforcement of High Seas Laws and Conventions as directed;
- assisting in the maintenance of radio communication equipment (operating at frequencies ranging from MF through UHF), Navtex transmission equipment, vessel traffic surveillance system and associated X-Band and S-Band radars, interferometry direction finding equipment, Differential GPS equipment and auxiliary diesel generators; and
Candidates must possess a U.K. Maritime Radio Communications General Certificate (MRGC) or Commonwealth equivalent, a DTI Radar Maintenance Certificate, and a GMDSS General Operators Certificate. A minimum of three (3) years post training experience in marine radio operations is required.

Training will be given in maritime search and rescue planning and coastal navigation if required. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential. Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, Access and Outlook and a basic understanding of PC networks would be desirable. The post holder may be required on occasion to make sea passages on Government vessels.
