Membership for Marine Professionals

Four corporate categories exist for marine scientists, technologists and engineers; Fellow, Member, Associate Member and Associate. Membership requirements for each category are based on the qualifications, knowledge, experience, competence and commitment of the individual which are established by a peer review process internationally recognised in the marine world. A range of post-nominal letters signify the various categories of membership (e.g. Fellow FImarEST). Corporate members also receive voting rights.

All corporate members may apply for professional registration. The institute is the only international awarding body for Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci) and Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech) status. The institute can also award Chartered Scientist status (CSci) and Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech) status to engineers through Engineering Council (UK) registration. The IMarEST encourages lifelong learning and continually supports the education, training and development of marine professionals to enable them to gain formal recognition of their professional status and to maintain their knowledge and skills.

A range of highly informative and interesting professional journals and other publications are available free of charge and at reduced rates to members including the marine scientist, journal of offshore technology and marine engineers review. IMarEST publish a number of technical proceedings including PARTC: Journal of Marine Science and Environment which allows publishing opportunities. For more information click here. Members also receive emarine, the institute’s electronic news letter and IMarEST news, a monthly printed newsletter.

The IMarEST offers many knowledge sharing opportunities. Membership opens a gateway to an established network of marine science professionals in 47 international branches. The institute is an internationally recognised learned society that arranges and conducts marine science and engineering conferences, symposia, seminars and scientific meetings.

As a member you will have access to the IMarEST’s Marine Information Centre, recognised as one of the leading sources of marine engineering, science and technology information in the world.

Non Corporate Memberships

Three non corporate memberships categories exist; Student (SIMarEST), Graduate (GIMarEST) and Affiliate (for those who are interested in the work of the institute). By becoming a student member or graduate member of the IMarEST you are able to demonstrate your competence, experience, commitment and professional status. By joining as a student or graduate member you take your first steps towards professional recognition. When you have graduated and have some experience under your belt you can chose to upgrade to one of the corporate categories. The IMarEST will be there to help you through the professional review process.

The IMarEST is keen to invest in the world’ future marine professionals. We subsidise membership fees for all students on marine science, technology and engineering related university courses. If you are on an IMarEST accredited course membership is absolutely free.

Membership benefits for students and graduates match those for corporate members (minus the voting rights). Plus you have access to the Young Marine Professionals network, careers and job search advice and access to scholarships and prizes.
