The Small Ships Group will
cater for Institute members working or intending to work in
the field of research design and construction, surveying and
consultancy, operation and maintenance with marine vessels
of all descriptions generally of length less than 50 metres
or under 500 tons gross.
Objectives
(a) To provide focal points for communications
between members both centrally and locally for the exchange
of knowledge and the advancement of technical expertise and
experience in the field. To provide a vehicle for Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) and representation on committees
and in external organisations and legislative bodies dealing
with small ships.
(b) To uphold and further the expertise, quality and status
of Group members working in the field. To develop, maintain
and publicise a register of approved members experienced in
the field and to maintain registers of approved professionals
(e.g. surveyors). To maintain a mailing list of interested
members. To maintain a database of members and their areas
of expertise and interest – membership access only.
(d) To provide help, advice and assess training progress of
newly qualified Institute members wishing to achieve a career
in Small Ships Group activities.
(e) To provide help and advice on training
to those Institute members intending to change their field
of employment in mid career to Small Ships Group activities.
(f) To advise on conferences, seminars and
papers pertaining to Small Ships Group activities in conjunction
with the Technical Manager and the Events Control Board (ECB)
and to encourage an interest in small vessels inside and outside
the Institute.
(g) To advise the Institute on suitable
specialist papers, publications and events pertinent to the
subject for reference by the membership.
(h) To encourage engineers, scientists
and technologists working in the small ships industry to seek
membership of the Institute and the SSG.
