Professional Affairs list

Stanley Gray Fellowships - awards of up to £2000 for postgraduate work (usually at PhD level) per student per year. The award is based upon a submission and interview by a number of senior members of the Institute. The amount of each award is at the discretion of the interviewing panel.

Undergraduate Scholarships (including ABS and Castrol prizes) – awards of £1000 to the best student on an undergraduate course accredited by the Institute. Up to 4 awards are granted per year. Three of the awards are sponsored by Industry, namely ABS Europe and Castrol. The award is based upon a submission from the student and supervising tutor and judged by a panel of senior members of the Institute.

Fugro GEOS Undergraduate Award  – an award of £500 to the best dissertation submitted by a student member of the IMarEST. This is award is offered to Final Year students enrolled on UK University or College courses that can demonstrate a commitment to physical oceanography, applied oceanography and/or meteorology The award is based upon a submission from the student and supervising tutor and judged by a panel of senior members of the Institute and from Fugro GEOS.

Armand Covell Scholarship -£1000 for student on the BEng course at South Tyneside College. Must be a member of the Institute.

IMarEST Prizes - awards of £50 to the best student on an undergraduate course accredited by the Institute. All universities that apply will receive an award.

Cadet Prizes – awards of £50 to Cadets from Warsash Maritime Centre, Glasgow College of Nautical Studies and South Tyneside College. (These are the only centres that have Cadet courses). For the Cadet that has had the best overall performance.

William Theodore Barker Prize – awards of £250 to candidates who are members of the Institute achieving best results in the Class II Examination for the Certificate of Competency.

W W Mariner Memorial Prize – awards of £100 to candidates who are members of the Institute achieving best results in the Class I Examination for the Certificate of Competency.

IMarEST Don Bootle Award for EngineeringAchievement – award given externally from the IMarEST’s Don Bootle Awards Fund.

Principal Awards

The IMarEST President’s Award:

An award of a signed certificate and up to £10,000.00 to be made as and when suitable recipients are identified but at intervals no more frequent than once every five years though this may be shortened in exceptional circumstances. The award is open to an engineer, scientist, technologist or research and/or development project team achieving the highest distinction in a maritime technology subject or subjects either by an outstanding achievement, the writing and presentation of a significant technical paper, or the writing of a technical book. The award is made for achievement completed in the previous ten years and the sum available may be awarded singly or shared amongst several award winners at the discretion of the IMarEST Council. The award is open to members and non-members and to all nationalities. Candidates will be required to state why they consider their project to be worthy of the award and to certify that it is an original piece of work.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award:

An award of a signed certificate and an engraved memento to be made as and when suitable recipients are identified at the IMarEST’s initiative and with the Duke of Edinburgh’s approval but no more frequently than once every three years. The award is open to an engineer, scientist, technologist or research and/or development project team that has demonstrated current examples of best practice in research, development, design, manufacture, production, or construction, of an engineering product or process which contributes to the protection or enhancement of the marine environment. The award is made for achievement completed in the previous ten years and may be awarded singly or shared amongst several award winners at the discretion of the Duke of Edinburgh and the IMarEST Council. The award is open to members and non-members and to all nationalities. Candidates will be required to state why they consider their project to be worthy of the award and to certify that it is an original piece of work.

 

Annual Awards

Denny Medals:

The Denny Gold Medal has been replaced by three Denny Silver Gilt Medals one for each of the three parts of the IMarEST Proceedings – A, B & Journal of Operational Oceanography. These will be funded by IMarEST HQ and awarded by Council on recommendations from the Editorial Boards passed through the Proceedings Supervisory Board. Joint authors are eligible with a maximum of 3 authors receiving a medal for any one paper. The Denny (3) Medal winner(s) will not be eligible for any Stanley Gray Award in the year their paper won the Denny Medal.

Stanley Gray Silver Medal:

This IMarEST Medal has been introduced for the best winner of a Branch Certificate in the preceding year within each Division. To be eligible for a Stanley Gray Medal, the Branch Certificate winners must be able to provide a formal paper reflecting on the presentation made. This Medal will be funded by IMarEST HQ and awarded by Divisional Council on recommendation from the Branch Committees.

Stanley Gray Award – Branch Certificate:

A new Branch Certificate is introduced for the best presentation made as part of their programmes within each of the Branches. The award of the Branch Certificates will be Provided by HQ and awarded by Branch Committees from nominations made by their respective members.

BMEC Donald Maxwell Award:

The BMEC Donald Maxwell Award of £500 is awarded annually for the best paper presented to or published by the Institute by a member or non-member of any nationality on the research and/or development of some aspect of marine equipment and its market potential. Papers for this award are assessed by the Institute’s Publications Supervisory Board whose recommendations will be passed to the Donald Maxwell Fund Trustees for approval.
