Occupation: Marine Engineer Officer, Royal Navy Matt joined the Royal Navy in 1981 as a technician and following promotion in 1998 he returned to sea as Deputy Marine Engineer Officer of a Type 22 frigate. In 1996 he read for an MSc in Marine Electrical Engineering and went on to be the Electrical Propulsion Development Officer in the Defence Logistics Organisation. In 1999 Matt became the Head of Controls and Diagnostics at the Navy’s engineering school where he was responsible for training technicians, lecturing to post-graduate engineers and he support ed the successful endorsement of course material as a matching section for CEng registration. In 2001 he was appointed to a Destroyer as Marine Engineer Officer during a major refit; delivering the ship ahead of schedule, under budget, then completing a highly successful deployment. Most recently, Matt has been the Technical Manager for Marine Systems Development in the Defence Procurement Agency and is now serving in Fleet HQ responsible for marine engineering policy and practice in all Major Warships.
Electoral Statement: With extensive practical, operational, technical and leadership experience, underpinned by Masters level education, I possess a depth and breadth of marine engineering with a particular interest in new and emerging technologies. A highly reliable team member with significant interpersonal skills, I relish the opportunity to serve as Member of Council.
