Dr S E Cornell CMarSCi MIMarEST

Date of Birth: 5th March 1969 (36)

Occupation: Research Scientist BSc (Kingston, 1st Hons) Applied Chemistry, PhD (UEA) Marine Environmental Chemistry. Also Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, CChem. I am Senior Researcher at the University of Bristol with a joint role in environmental change research and in the science coordination of a 5-year Natural Environment Research Council programme, QUEST-Quantifying and Understanding the Earth System. I have worked in university research since 1991, previously working at the University of East Anglia, Norwich and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. My primary research areas are marine biogeochemistry research (nutrient cycling, atmospheric pollutants in the marine environment); integrated coastal zone management; sustainability science; flood and coastal erosion risk management; climate change impacts and societal responses. I serve on the Council of the Challenger Society for Marine Science. Additional interests are improving the environment science-policy-practice interface; the public understanding of science; equality of opportunity in science, engineering and technology.

Electoral Statement: I became involved in IMarEST because I believe that today’s challenges in the marine environment are best resolved by professionals drawing on integrated knowledge and experience. Solutions increasingly depend upon the science-technology-engineering continuum. I am committed to exploring new connections and dialogues within The Institute’s wider scope.

Elected: CMarSci, MIMarEST; Member of the Technical Affairs Committee and Member of the Board of Trustees.

Proposer: P S Liss
